Based on a classic mint julep, I bring you a basil julep which is very refreshing and perfect for sipping as the sun goes down. When I was asked by Heritage Distilling Company to sample their products I jumped at the chance. They have a wide variety of products and what caught my eye was their rye whiskey. We all know a classic mint julep, but this spin on a classic is made with peppery Heritage rye whiskey and basil instead of mint. This is a very simple drink recipe, fresh basil leaves muddled in simple syrup shaken with rye whiskey and water. The pepper and spices of the rye are offset with the freshness and aroma of the basil to make a perfectly civilized sipping drink.
